Guinea pigs with red eyes has been a contrvershal topic for along time. Guinea pig rescues and shelters are full of red eyed guinea pigs because they're harder to adopt out, this is because of the rumors about red eyed guinea pigs. Obviously, everyone is going to have their own opinion about red eyes, but this post will provide the correct information on red eyes, in contrast to the circlating rumors!
First, Breeders Split eye colour into 3 main catagories, Dark eyes (which can be further split into Black, Brown and blue eyes) Pink eyes (Red eyes) and Dark with ruby cast (When they look dark but when the light hits the eyes at a certain angle they look red.
Commonly asked questions/ rumors.
The first thing that i see alot is people asking the question ' My guinea pig has red eyes, are they blind?'
No! No they're not blind. They can see just as well as any guinea pigs with dark eyes. It's just a pigment in their eyes, just like humans can have brown, blue or green eyes. The colour of their eyes doesn't effect their vision, however, if their eyes appear cloudy or discharge is coming from the eyes, then you should seek proffesional advice as this could signal a health problem.
Another thing that i see commonly is ' Red eyes creep me out'
Obviously, this is personal opinion and I can't ultimately change that, but there is no reason to be creeped out by them. The colour of your guinea pigs eyes does not effect its personality. Which leads me onto the next thing.
Guinea pigs with red eyes are evil!
No! Guinea pigs with red eyes are not evil! Eye colour does not effect the behaviour of your guinea pig it is just the pigment of their eyes, it doesn't determin their personalities and most definatly does not make them evil! If you do happen to have and unfriendly pig that has red eyes, it is nothing to do with its eye colour.
Thankyou for reading and i hope that this has cleared up some of the rumors that are circulating on social media.
